Claytec – Clay Dry Building Boards
Description
1. The Material: Claytec Dry Building Boards are heavy, dimensionally stable panels engineered from raw clay (loam), sand, and natural reinforcing fibers (such as wood fiber, reed, or straw). They function as a direct, drop-in replacement for conventional gypsum drywall in timber-frame or metal-stud interior construction. Unlike gypsum, which is chemically altered during production and often bound with synthetic additives, these clay boards harden strictly through natural evaporation.
2. The Company & The Story: Based in Germany, Claytec has industrialized the ancient technique of earth building (Lehmbau) to fit modern commercial and residential construction timelines. Recognizing the massive carbon and waste footprint of the interior fit-out industry (specifically unrecyclable drywall), they created a dry-assembly clay system that allows builders to install raw earth rapidly using standard screws and cutting tools.
3. Technical & Commercial Summary: Supplied as rigid panels, this B2B system is utilized for interior partition walls, ceilings, and internal linings of exterior walls. Once screwed into place, the joints are taped (often with jute mesh) and the entire surface is finished with a thin coat of Claytec mineral plaster. It provides massive thermal mass and superior acoustic insulation compared to hollow drywall.
4. Features:
-
Gypsum & Cement Free: Completely eliminates the need for calcined gypsum and Portland cement, bypassing the high embodied energy required to manufacture standard drywall.
-
Infinite Reusability: Because the clay is never chemically cured or fired, a demolished board can simply be crushed, mixed with water, and reused as raw clay plaster indefinitely.
-
Hygroscopic Core: Acts as a passive indoor climate regulator. The porous clay structure rapidly absorbs excess indoor humidity and releases it naturally, preventing mold growth without synthetic membranes.
-
Thermal Mass: Adds significant density to lightweight timber-frame structures, helping to passively stabilize indoor temperatures during seasonal fluctuations.
