Clayworks – Unfired Natural Clay Plasters
Description
1. The Material: Clayworks plasters are ultra-low carbon, unfired, naturally pigmented finishes for interior walls and ceilings. Manufactured from a unique blend of abundant unfired clays, minerals, and natural earth pigments, they contain zero synthetic polymers or toxic VOCs. Unlike conventional gypsum or cement-based plasters, clay is highly breathable. It acts as a natural humidity regulator, absorbing excess moisture from the air and releasing it when needed, actively preventing mold and improving indoor air quality. Because the material is unfired, it retains its natural state, meaning a wall plastered with Clayworks can technically be moistened, scraped off, and fully remixed/reused even decades later.
2. The Company & The Story: Based in Cornwall, United Kingdom, Clayworks was founded by Adam Weismann and Katy Bryce. Before creating the company, Adam and Katy traveled the globe to study ancient cob and earth-building techniques. Deeply inspired by these ancestral, naturally regenerative building methods, they wrote comprehensive books on natural building before developing Clayworks. Their mission was to formulate a product that honors the ecological brilliance of traditional raw earth architecture but delivers it in a refined, reliable, and seamless format ready for high-end contemporary design.
3. Technical & Commercial Summary: Commercially supplied as a dry powder to minimize transportation weight, it simply requires mixing with water on-site. Applied manually by trowel, it offers an exceptionally long lifespan with zero maintenance other than occasional dry dusting. Available in standard finishes (Smooth, Tonal, Demi-Rustic, Rustic) and custom bespoke textures, it provides superior acoustic dampening and thermal mass for high-end hospitality, retail, and residential projects.
-
Unfired & Ultra-Low Carbon: Manufactured without energy-intensive kilns, saving massive amounts of CO2 compared to gypsum or cement.
-
Passive Humidity Regulation: High vapor permeability actively manages indoor moisture levels naturally.
-
Infinite Repairability: The plaster remains raw and un-stabilized; scratches or dents can be repaired seamlessly by simply re-wetting and troweling the surface.
-
Acoustic & Thermal Performance: Reduces reverberation in open spaces and provides natural thermal mass.
-
Seamless Application: Applied in continuous layers without expansion joints, creating monolithic, highly aesthetic surfaces.
Analysis & Certificates
Environmental & Bio-Technical Analysis: The product completely avoids high-temperature firing, drastically cutting embodied carbon at the manufacturing stage. Biologically, the exclusion of synthetic resins and VOCs ensures the material is non-toxic to human health. From a lifecycle perspective, its un-stabilized nature allows for 100% end-of-life circularity; the plaster can be hydrated, removed, and composted or reused infinitely without degrading soil ecosystems.
Biolisty Status: Verified by Biolisty. This material meets and exceeds our strictest regenerative architecture standards. It successfully balances true ecological circularity with high commercial viability and aesthetic excellence.
