The Material: Spun out of Imperial College London, Seratech has developed a groundbreaking carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technology that produces truly carbon-neutral concrete. Traditional cement production emits vast amounts of CO2. Seratech intercepts this process by capturing industrial CO2 emissions directly from flues and reacting them with olivine, an abundant naturally occurring mineral. This chemical process yields a highly reactive silica supplementary cementitious material (SCM) and magnesium carbonate. By replacing a portion of traditional Portland cement with Seratech’s silica, the sequestered carbon completely offsets the emissions of the remaining cement. The result is a high-performance, carbon-neutral drop-in concrete mix that requires absolutely no change to existing manufacturing infrastructure or building practices.

Description:Seratech’s technology captures CO2 directly from industrial flues and mineralizes it using naturally abundant magnesium silicate (olivine). This process yields two highly valuable products: pure silica, which acts as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) to replace Portland cement, and magnesium carbonate, permanently locking away the carbon.
