Biolith® Biocement
Description
Biolith® Biocement – Microbially Grown Zero-Carbon Concrete Alternative
The Material:
Developed by Biomason, Biolith® represents a monumental leap in regenerative construction. Traditional Portland cement is responsible for approximately 8% of global CO2 emissions due to the massive heat required in firing kilns. Biomason disrupts this highly polluting industry by utilizing natural microorganisms to “grow” biocement at ambient temperatures. Through a process called microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP)—similar to how coral reefs naturally form in the ocean—Biomason creates highly durable calcium carbonate binders. Mixed with standard aggregates, Biolith® tiles and bricks offer the same structural integrity, compressive strength, and aesthetic appeal as conventional concrete or ceramic tiles, but with a drastically reduced carbon footprint. It is the ultimate drop-in replacement for zero-carbon architecture.
Technical Features:
-
Ambient Temperature Growth: Grown without the need for high-heat firing kilns, eliminating massive amounts of CO2 emissions.
-
Exceptional Compressive Strength: Matches or exceeds the structural and mechanical performance of standard traditional concrete.
-
Microbial Biomineralization: Utilizes natural, non-pathogenic bacteria to bind aggregates with calcium carbonate.
-
Low Embodied Carbon: Radically minimizes the carbon footprint of building projects, aiding in LEED and other green building certifications.
-
Versatile Applications: Perfect for interior and exterior flooring, wall claddings, and decorative architectural facades.
Analysis & Certificates
The construction industry frequently relies on "carbon offset" schemes to greenwash the devastating emissions of traditional Portland cement. Biomason eliminates the problem at the source. By replacing energy-intensive kilns with natural microbial biomineralization, Biomason’s Biocement® technology proves that high-performance structural materials can be grown regeneratively at ambient temperatures, fundamentally decoupling construction from carbon emissions.
