1. The Material: Ioncell is a high-performance regenerated cellulose fiber. It is produced by dissolving lignocellulosic biomass—such as wood pulp, recycled cardboard, or post-consumer cotton textiles—using a novel, non-toxic ionic liquid solvent. Unlike traditional Viscose or Rayon production, which relies on highly toxic and flammable Carbon Disulfide (CS2), the Ioncell process is entirely free of hazardous chemicals. The resulting fiber possesses high tensile strength, excellent moisture absorption, and a soft tactile feel, closely mirroring the properties of premium cotton or Lyocell.
2. The Company & The Story: Originating from extensive research at Aalto University and the University of Helsinki in Finland, Ioncell Oy was established to commercialize this breakthrough in material science. The textile industry is currently trapped between the massive water and land footprint of virgin cotton and the microplastic pollution of synthetic polyester. Furthermore, chemical recycling of old textiles often involves toxic solvents. Ioncell solves this by utilizing a closed-loop dry-jet wet spinning technique with a proprietary ionic liquid, turning waste streams directly into virgin-quality fibers.
3. Technical & Commercial Summary: Targeted at B2B textile mills, fashion houses, and industrial fabric manufacturers, Ioncell fibers serve as a direct drop-in replacement for conventional cotton, Viscose, and Polyester (PET). Because the process can accept mixed cellulosic waste (like old denim and newspapers), it provides a true circular economy loop for the fashion and paper industries, preventing millions of tons of biomass from ending up in landfills or incinerators.
4. Features:
Zero Carbon Disulfide (CS2): Completely eliminates the toxic chemical processing standard in traditional Viscose/Rayon manufacturing.
Closed-Loop Solvent System: The non-toxic ionic liquid used to dissolve the cellulose is recovered and reused in the manufacturing cycle, minimizing chemical waste.
Waste Feedstock Valorization: Capable of upcycling post-consumer cotton textiles and recycled paper/cardboard into high-tenacity fibers.
Zero Microplastics: As a 100% cellulosic material, unblended Ioncell sheds no synthetic microfibers during washing and is fully compostable at the end of its life.
