1. The Material: The Mimmik Tile (formerly known as BioBasedTile) represents a radical leap in biomimetic material science. Traditional ceramic tiles require high-heat firing (up to 1,200°C), while concrete tiles rely on highly polluting Portland cement. Mimmik Tile bypasses both. Utilizing technology developed by Biomason, these tiles are literally “grown” at ambient temperatures using natural bacteria. The process mimics how coral reefs build their structures in the ocean. The bacteria combine carbon and calcium to create a robust biocement binder, which holds together waste materials (such as granite dust) without any synthetic resins or kilns.
2. The Company & The Story: FRONT® (formerly known as StoneCycling) is a Dutch company famous for pushing the boundaries of circular architecture. Originally starting with their WasteBasedBricks, they realized that to truly decarbonize the industry, they needed to eliminate firing processes entirely. They partnered with US-based biotech company Biomason to bring the Mimmik Tile to the European market. Now in its third generation of technological refinement, the Mimmik Tile proves that we can transition from “manufacturing” building materials with extreme heat to “growing” them with biology.
